First Impressions

Upon arriving in New Orleans, I was first struck by the atmosphere. I knew that this place was special; everybody who has been here is enchanted by its charming, bold culture. This applies to the people here (locals and tourists alike), the post-destruction attitudes, and the desire for celebrating life and community. I also enjoyed observing the relationships and conversations between locals, Bonners, other volunteers, and other tourists. Being in such a different place, walking around the Lower and Upper Ninth Ward instantaneously changes our perspective and forces us to blend into the culture – which means being more open-minded, friendly and empathetic.
Seeing the actual levees, bayou and then the homes currently being rebuilt was eye-opening and heartbreaking. I was saddened that people who were evicted were not able to come back to this beautiful and culturally-rich place they used to call home. Hearing the stories about Juanita (?) who kept getting her money stolen by contractors and being wronged by volunteers depressed me. It is interesting to see what negativity people are capable of when they are desperate for money. However, everybody lost things – possessions, family, friends – with the hurricane, and I am amazed at how often this robbery occurred. When that happens, the community’s bond is broken and the emotions of anger, sadness and frustration from the government and people who have wronged them.
Another source of conversation was the Brad Pitt houses, which were funded by Brad Pitt’s organization. The people were upset that his project bought land and sold the houses back for more than they previously would have been, but he is one individual who has given back to this community that has been temporarily altered by the hurricane.
I am really enjoying the Southern culture and the bonds between us volunteers and the locals. The give-and-take experience allows the volunteers to gain insight and motivation while these people gain a new house.
